Instagram launches multi-clip video editing feature to rival Tik Tok

Instagram announced the launch of Instagram Reels, a new 15-second multi-clip video editing feature, that allows you to add audio and effects, on Wednesday.

Sound familiar?

Instagram has previously integrated just about every kind of video and photo editing and sharing platform into the app, with IG TV, IG stories, IG music, and now, Instagram Reels, which they’re calling “a new way to create and discover short, entertaining videos on Instagram.”

The feature, which will likely rival — or replace —  Tik Tok allows you to record clips and add music or sounds, add features, add seamless transitions, adjust the speed, or use a timer or countdown.

Reels can also either be recorded all at once, or in a series of clips, as well as by uploading videos from your gallery.

Reels can be created at the bottom of your Instagram camera, beside Stories, and can be shared with your followers on feed, and, if your account is public, you can make them available to the wider Instagram community through a new space in the explore page.

Similar to IGTV, Reels will fall under a separate tab on your profile where people can see what you’ve shared.

To find other users’ Reels, the explore page on Instagram will showcase a selection of entertaining Reels from users all across the app.

Similar to Tik Tok, the explore page will also have a “featured” panel, where a series of featured Reels chosen by Instagram for you will appear.

If you appear on the featured panel, Instagram will send you a notification.

“Reels gives people new ways to express themselves, discover more of what they love on Instagram, and help anyone with the ambition of becoming a creator take center stage,” Instagram said in a release.

We don’t know about you, but we’re going to go brush up on our dance moves.
