Visit Washington State Parks without a Discover Pass this Saturday

Sep 24 2020, 11:32 pm

Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission reopened state-managed parks in May.

With the reopening comes the return of State Parks Free Days, which allow visitors to enjoy the parks for day use without a Discover Pass.

This month will see one more free day on September 26, in recognition of National Public Lands Day.

The free day applies only to day use, not overnight stays or rented facilities.

A Discover Pass will not be required on WDFW or Washington State Park lands but will be required on lands managed by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.

The Discover Pass is only necessary for motor vehicles and isn’t required if you wish to access the parks by boat or non-motorized means.

The pass was created in 2011 to offset steep reductions in general tax support for parks and other recreation lands and facilities. When you buy the pass, you’re helping to keep the state’s outdoor recreation sites open and accessible to the public.

There are two pass options: a $30 annual pass, valid for one year from the date of purchase, or a $10 day pass.

The remaining 2020 State Parks free days are planned to remain as scheduled:

  • September 13 — Girls Scouts Love State Parks Day
  • September 26 — National Public Lands Day
  • November 11 — Veterans Day
  • November 27 — Autumn Day
