Downtown Calgary YMCA closing its doors permanently

The Gray Family Eau Claire YMCA will not be resuming operations when YMCA Calgary is cleared to re-open by provincial health authorities.

The facility will be permanently closed after having been a fixture in the community for more than 30 years.

The Calgary Eau Claire YMCA location had been experiencing rising costs, a diminishing membership base, extensive capital requirements, and other obstacles within the downtown environment for a number of years prior to the pandemic.

“Our experience through COVID-19 has heightened these impacts,” said the YMCA in a statement, “But the challenges existed well before the pandemic arrived.”

Current members and those participating in activities at the Gray Family Eau Claire YMCA can reach out to the facility to have their questions answered, including information about how they can stay with the YMCA by using the city-wide membership model.

The Gray Family Eau Claire YMCA will be communicating directly with families who access their child care at this location to help them through this transition. The facility’s child care centre will remain open until April 30.

As for the building itself? The YMCA will continue an intentional process with expert partners to determine what will happen to the space.

Fitness lovers in downtown Calgary will have to find new ways to stay active – if they haven’t already due to the pandemic’s temporary closures.
