Minecraft: Education Edition crafts tools for student to learn from home

An educational version of the popular video game Minecraft is available for remote learning to promote continuing student growth during coronavirus shutdowns.

The worldwide sensation that is Minecraft brings the fun of the sandbox to the digital world. Leaping into a randomly generated land, players can source their way through survival mode, or express their artistic mind in the creative more.

Now, in the wake of educational system shutdowns all over the globe, Minecraft: Education Edition — the teaching tool version of the video game — has expanded to allow virtual lessons to combat an ever-evolving scenario.

“Distance learning requires students to be engaged in content in news ways,” says Minecraft certified trainer Becky Keene on the blog. “As they work remotely, they need to have activities and environments that motivate them to learn. Minecraft supports almost any content area, and students can show me their learning without missing a beat!”

A vast expansion of lessons included in the Minecraft remote-learning tool includes creative building areas, lessons to teach kids computing and code, math curriculums at multiple levels, emotional learning, and more.

The team at Minecraft also boasts that there are “hundreds” of lessons in an individual atmosphere, for kids to log-on and learn in their own time.

As Minecraft is a product of the Microsoft line-up, teachers and those with education-based Office 365 accounts, can register for free. Simply check account registration via an online form, from now until June of 2020.

Others can purchase a license for the program, or try the system for free in a trial.

For parents, or eager students that already own Minecraft (the base game), Xbox and Microsoft announced that a free education package has been uploaded to the Minecraft marketplace.
