Cream of Wheat brand to undergo review amid systemic racism concerns

The Cream of Wheat brand is going under “immediate review,” says parent company B&G Foods Inc., to ensure the business does not contribute to systemic racism.

B&G Foods announced the decision on Wednesday, citing “concerns” about the image of the chef on the product’s package.

“B&G Foods, Inc. today announced that we are initiating an immediate review of the Cream of Wheat brand packaging. We understand there are concerns regarding the Chef image, and we are committed to evaluating our packaging and will proactively take steps to ensure that we and our brands do not inadvertently contribute to systemic racism,” reads the company’s statement.

“B&G Foods unequivocally stands against prejudice and injustice of any kind.”

Earlier this week, PepsiCo and Quaker, who own the Aunt Jemima brand, said that the pancake and syrup product name and packaging will soon retire, as its origins are based on a racial stereotype.

Also this week, it was announced that the Uncle Ben’s brand is set to “evolve” as its parent company, Mars Inc., says it’s taking a stand to help end racial bias and injustices.
