Over 100,000 Americans have now died from coronavirus
As of May 27, over 100,000 Americans have lost their lives due to COVID-19.
It has been 128 days since the first case of coronavirus was reported on North American soil (an elderly man in the state of Washington). Since then, the number of cases and deaths in the United States have climbed more steadily than anywhere else in the world.
As of Wednesday, the total number of confirmed cases in the US sits at 1,697,459. The death toll, now 100,271 and nearly three times as many as the next closest region (the UK has seen just over 37,000 fatalities), continues to rise despite reopening plans.
The US has seen a decrease in new daily tallies; however, the curve has not yet been set. A month ago, the global case count surpassed three million, one-third of which came from the United States.

President Donald Trump — who has since stopped his daily press briefings from the White House — has yet to make a comment on Wednesday’s landmark, though he did have this to say:

The White House has co-opted Trump’s recent silence but reshared the president’s tweet where he thanked a reporter for calling him “the greatest president in our history.”
