9 of the best coffee shops slinging bean juice in Portland

Nov 20 2019, 8:08 am

In a city where there are too many coffee shops and too little time, we understand that it’s intimidating to be faced with an endless number of java options when you’re trying to get your shot of caffeine for the day before work.

While PDX has some of the best coffee shops in the entire universe (no, we don’t think that’s hyperbole), and it’s hard to rank just a few, there are some cafes in our city that never fail to impress and offer consistently great coffee, and service.

Next time you’re looking to grab a creamy almond milk latte to unwind after a long day, or maybe a rich shot of Italian espresso to kickstart your nervous system, here are nine no-brainer coffee spots that will satisfy coffee lovers of every kind.

Ristretto Roasters

Ristretto Roasters locally roast all their coffee, and specialize in medium roast java. Their industrial and chic cafe features a roster of single-origin coffee that changes seasonally depending on what the coffee farmers Ristretto Roasters source from are growing. You can’t go wrong with a cup of coffee from these guys. They also offer a decent selection of breakfast goodies like cookies, croissants, cinnamon rolls and sandwiches to complement your perfectly brewed cup of caffeine.

Coava has some of most upbeat and friendly service you’ll ever find in a coffee shop. The company really cares about its coffee, and customers. Socially responsible and ethical coffee bean sourcing is especially important to this establishment, and their care extends to the production of their brews as well. Our personal favorite combination is their macchiato paired with a flakey, buttery croissant.

This hole-in-the-wall coffee shop nestled along the waterfront in Southwest Portland, is a unique combination of Portland coffee culture that “keeps its heart in Mexico.” Owners, Lucy Alvarez and Angel Medina, opened the cute shop in hopes of bringing together local coffee culture with their strong Mexican heritage. And true enough to their aspiration, the menu at Kiosko reflects that. You can’t visit Kiosko and not try their Mexican Mocha, a dreamy and creamy mocha topped with freeze-dried raspberries and cocoa nibs. Pair it with their soft conchas, which are soul-satisfying Mexican sweet bread rolls.

This specialty coffee shop is run by a couple of friends trying to achieve their dream to create “grade A, off-the-charts, get-me-out-of-bed-in-the-morning” coffee. Push X Pull offers one of the best espressos in PDX. They even offer coffee brew sampling if you want to taste the difference in brewing and bean production methods to find that perfect cup of joe.

True to its name, Heart Coffee has a whole lot of heart. With three locations and a roasting facility in Portland, owners Rebekah & Wille Yli-Luoma care about maintaining ethical and direct relationships with the coffee farmers they source from. The industrial and stylist cafe is a great place to work and enjoy some incredible coffee at the same time. Their honey cardamom latte has a cult-like status and with good reason. The fragrance and nuttiness of cardamon highlights the acidity of their coffee, while milk and honey mellow the drink to create an exotic and rich coffee experience all in a single cup.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters are the coffee heavyweight champions of Portland. While they have several locations across the city, the downtown location is still Stumptown’s largest location. The coffee shop is large and beautiful, and features not only some of the best coffee in all of Portland, but also some incredible rotating art shows. This coffee chain is simple and straightforward, they offer great coffee, great service, and great vegan baked goods. No-nonsense and delicious, just the way we like it.

You can’t really talk about coffee shops in Portland without mentioning Upper Left Roasters even once. Upper Left Roasters has a no-nonsense policy. They serve up delicious coffee and even more delicious food. We recommend pairing their Americano with spelt avocado toast, with radish, soft boiled egg and peppers for the perfect breakfast experience.

Described as “snob-free” coffee, this is one of the coolest coffee shops in the city. This establishment is a sneaker-themed coffee shop, and while the shop doesn’t sell any sneakers (yet!), they rotate cool art work and rare sneaker collections in the shop every month. But don’t be deceived by their seeming obsession with sneakers, Deadstock Coffee Roasters doesn’t mess around when it comes to their coffee. The stylish coffee haunt offers perfectly roasted coffee brews and delicious pound cakes and pastries. Head on over to meet some pretty rad people who are super passionate about their coffee-brewing craft.

Good Coffee is, well, pretty darn good. The coffee chain has three other locations across PDX, all of which serve some amazing coffee. While you can’t really go wrong with any of their coffee beverages, their matcha lavender latte deserves a special shout out for just how heavenly it tastes. They also offer breakfast burritos along with a variety of pastries and baked goods to accompany your cup of very good, Good Coffee!
