A formal-wear outdoor hockey tournament is coming to Montreal next month

Hockey tournaments are usually associated with speed, grit, and agility but next month you can add “best dressed” to the good old hockey game.

The sixth edition of the WRG Classic fuses our national pastime with blazers, bow-ties, tweeds, live music, and food trucks for both men and women with 20th century fashion.

“At the WRG Classic, all skill levels are welcome to play,” reads the tournament’s website. “From outdoor rink-rats to seasoned pros, men and women suit up in their finest to hit the ice for a friendly tournament.”

This winter’s edition is expanding to six teams for a total of 60 players and six goalies. Roster spots are filled out on a first-come, first-served basis and players are drafted by tournament organizers to level the playing iceĀ field as much as possible.

“Experience everything from stellar food and drink to a marketplace overflowing with artisanal and local items in the heart of the Sud-Ouest of Montreal,” says the WRG Classic website. The outdoor tourny hosts food trucks, drinks, and post-intermission oysters.

All players at the weekend tournament are given iconic Sher-Wood 5030 wood hockey sticks, provided by the company.

Due to the nature of outdoor events, the weather in the weeks leading up to the tournament will factor the schedule of games. To accommodate the best playing experience, game times may vary and organizers ask spectators and players alike to stay updated on the event’s website.

Registration for the tournament is now open and prices range from $40 to $80. Visit the WRG Classic website for more details.

For people who just want to dress up and soak up some good old fashioned puck, attendance is free.
