Trudeau announces $9M to help seniors during pandemic

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the government is giving $9 million to the United Way to help seniors deal with isolation measures during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The money will go to the United Way’s New Horizons program, so workers can visit more seniors and help them with grocery shopping or check on their health.

“You are probably even more isolated than you may be normally. Maybe you’re having trouble getting your shopping done or meeting your own personal needs,” Trudeau said, speaking to seniors.

Trudeau also spoke briefly to kids, acknowledging that recent weeks have been tough for them.

“You haven’t seen your friends, haven’t been able to go to school. You’re hunkered down with your parents,” Trudeau said. “Maybe there’s more tension in your family than usual.”

He suggested children out to Kids Help Phone at 1-800-668-6868 or by texting 68 68 68
if they’re having trouble coping. The federal government is giving $7.5 million to the help line as it deals with higher call volumes.
