Transit riders in Montreal can now track STM bus occupancy in real-time.
In August, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) began rolling out a newer version of its mobile website in an effort to “improve the customer experience for its users.”
The new mobile site has a user experience that is similar to an app and helps riders make “smart decisions” about travelling, according to a news release.

To view the occupancy level of any STM bus, riders can select a bus line on the new mobile site and a symbol will indicate how many people are on the bus in four options: nearly empty, some availability, standing room only, and nearly full.
The website function is meant to help riders feel more comfortable on the bus and make it easier to make a judgment call based on physical distancing measures.

Each year, according to the STM, customers visit the transit’s web site 24 million times from mobile devices, accounting for close to 80% of total visits. “The new version of the mobile site was designed to allow quick viewing of schedules and nearby routes, a need expressed by 86% of customers in preliminary testing,” says the news release.
