Hopefully your ears and heart have soothed since yesterday’s country-wide mobile alert tests. ‘Cause the City of Montreal will keep its citizens on their toes again today by sounding sirens at 2 pm.
The city is testing its alert procedure, intended to reduce the risks associated with potential industrial accidents.
The warnings are to take place in the event of a toxic leak at one of the city’s plants. Protection authorities stress that in the event of an actual emergency, anyone within earshot of the sirens is to get inside as quickly as possible and close all doors and windows.
According to the Ville de Montreal website, since the propagation of sound is influenced by weather conditions, it is possible that “all persons within hearing range will actually hear the siren.”
The statement continues that people who are indoors may not hear the siren and that the purpose of today’s tests are to warn people situated outdoors that they must take shelter.
The siren tests aim to ensure the proper function of actual sirens as well as the state of preparedness of all emergency first responders.
Nine siren sound alerts will go off at 2 pm for a total of 3 minutes around these participating industrial plants:
