Revenu Québec confirmed in a statement this morning that a data breach affecting 23,000 past and present employees has resulted in two arrests.

The province’s tax collection agency said two employees who had access to the company’s data transferred information to outside sources.

The tax agency says an internal investigation has shown that data wasn’t sold to third parties, nor was the breach used for “malicious purposes.”

Following last month’s investigation, the Sûreté du Québec arrested a 39-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man, both from Québec.

According to Revenu Québec’s statement, “the majority” of breaches involved the names and social insurance numbers of clients and some cases involved people’s date of birth and salaries.

Overall tax records of Quebecers were not affected, according to Revenu Québec.

People affected by the breach will be contacted in “the coming days” and that protective measures against their files are being considered.

The tax agency said they are in “constant communication” with police and officials following the breach.
