Environment Canada issues major rainfall warning for Metro Montreal

May 5 2017, 11:33 pm

As the rain continues to fall, Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Metro Montreal on Friday.

The warning is current in effect for: Châteauguay – La Prairie area, Laval area, Longueuil Varennes area, and Montréal Island area.

According to the warning, rain, at times heavy, is expected. The ground, already near saturation, has little ability to absorb further rainfall.

The current weather system will affect the province of Quebec through Sunday giving significant rainfall amounts, with rain expected to intensify today.

Environment Canada is calling for 25 to 50 millimetres through Saturday evening, but additional amounts are expected later on.

While the temperature is going up tomorrow, the forecast for Montreal shows rain for the next week.

Because of current high water levels, the additional rainfall could cause more problems.

Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible and Environment Canada recommends staying away from washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.
