Freelancers try to focus more on the ‘lancer’ part of the word rather than the ‘free’ and luckily for us, Montreal has been ranked as one of the best cities in the world to find freelance work.

According to AppJobs, a website that links job seekers to app-based companies, Montreal is the eighth best city in the world to be a freelancer.

Wedged between a few heavy hitters in the likes of New York City and Milan, AppJobs credits Montreal’s vast number public WiFi spots and our low cost of living as major factors when it comes to the freelance industry.

“We have looked at the best cities to live in around the world and analyzed a series of metrics, such as the number of freelance jobs, number of cafes with free WiFi, cost of living, average self-employed salary, and the percent of the city population that currently freelance,” says the study. “We created a score out of 100 to reveal the best freelancer friendly cities around the world for those looking for more independence in their career.”

AppJobs seeded the list by analyzing metrics from Tripadvisor, Numbeo, Indeed, and Wiman to find data points for its categories.

Paris, London, and Madrid topped the list with scores of 54.3, 53.7, and 47.1, respectively.
