SPVM warn of fraudsters using police phone numbers to extort money

The SPVM (Service de police de la Ville de Montréal) is warning the public about fraudsters using the phone numbers of government services and police departments to try to extort money from citizens.

According to Montreal police, the scammers are using a computer app that allows them to display specific phone numbers “of their choice” during phone calls.

In a press release, the SPVM reminds citizens to never divulge personal information during phone calls.

“No police or government department is ever going to asking citizens to transfer funds by cryptocurrency or to purchase cards,” states the SPVM.

Anyone who’s been the victim of telephone fraud is urged to contact their local police station or to file a complaint through 911 if it’s an emergency.
