Montreal is officially a metropolis city.
In a unanimous decision, Members of Quebec’s National Assembly passed Bill 121 today meaning Montreal will officially become Quebec’s metropolis.
Montreal’s metropolis status will grant the city certain powers that are held by ministries in the provincial government.
Montreal will officially be able to make decisions on homelessness, social housing, and the integration of immigrants.
The city will also be able to make its own decisions regarding business opening hours and the permits authorizing alcohol consumption and sales.

Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre tweeted about the achievement, calling it a “historic day.”
