Montreal's illuminated "scaffold Christmas tree" has returned to downtown

The most memorable kind of Christmas trees are the ones with character, and downtown Montreal’s “Sapin XP” certainly fits the scaffold mould.

XP_MTL, a non-profit organization that offers festive programming, has set up a giant Christmas tree in front of the Place Canada Trust, made out of scaffolding, because, Montreal.

Given Montreal’s perpetual state of construction, the scaffold Christmas tree is a poetic fit for the city.

Last year, the XP_MTL tree was accompanied by a six-person choir, Quebec singer Annie Villeneuve, and a DJ as part of the 60-foot tree’s inauguration event.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the scaffold tree was unveiled without crowds or singing.

The tree is expected to stay lit on the corner of Drummond and Ste. Catherine until the first week of 2021.
