Missing Montreal boy found safe after "nearly 24 hours alone" in Vermont woods

The 15-year-old Montreal boy who had been missing in Vermont has been found safe and sound.

“Shmuel Rabinowitz was located and escorted out of the woods uninjured,” reads an update from the Vermont State Police website.

Rabinowitz was separated from his peers at Pioneers Camp, a Jewish Orthodox summer camp. The Montrealer went missing while hiking on a trail in Killington on Wednesday night before being found on Thursday at 6 pm.

According to Chaverim of Rockland County, an emergency service organization comprised of volunteers, Rabinowitz was spotted by a local hiker who recognized the boy from posters with his information.

He used the hiker’s cellphone to contact authorities and update them on his safety.

The boy was found 19 miles away from the camp’s command centre and by 8 pm he was back with his family.

Search and rescue crews had been scouting the area, led by the Vermont State Police including a team comprised of Killington Search and Rescue, Killington Fire Department, New England K9 Search and Rescue, Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team, Vermont Fish and Wildlife, Vermont Air National Guard, US Forest Service and the Green Mountain Club, and the Hatzoloh Montreal emergency medical services.
