KFC Canada testing out plant-based fried chicken
It’s a Kentucky fried miracle: KFC Canada has announced it’s testing plant-based fried chicken for a very limited time.
And by limited, we mean it will only be available at one of KFC’s restaurants in Canada this month. But if all goes well, the fast-food chain could roll the plant-based options out nationally in 2020.
The eatery has partnered with LightLife, a leading plant-based protein brand, to debut its meat-free chicken sandwich and popcorn chicken, which will be available for one day in Mississauga, Ontario on Wednesday, November 27.

“We believe the Colonel’s famous finger lickin’ good taste should have no boundaries,” said Sam Redman, chief marketing officer, KFC Canada, in a statement.
“So we’ve created several craveable plant-based options for Canadian’s looking for a meat-free meal.”
Those interested in giving the new menu options a try can head to KFC at 6055 Creditview Road in Mississauga between the hours of 10:30 am and 11 pm, or while supplies last.
The Plant-Based Fried Chicken sandwich (available in regular or spicy) will be priced at $6.99 or in a meal starting from $8.99, while the Plant-Based Fried Popcorn Chicken bucket will retail at $3.99.
Or, if you’re really feeling hungry, you can enjoy both menu options (and fries, salad, and a drink) for $10.99.

Dan Curtin, president and CEO of Greenleaf Foods, the owner of Lightlife, says this is a “landmark moment.”
“We’re proud to join forces with KFC to bring Canadians a plant-based chicken with incredible taste. With pioneering partners like KFC, we can make plant-based foods more broadly available to the growing number of consumers seeking the option on the go.”
In addition to the new KFC Plant-Based Fried Chicken options, KFC Canada has been offering fans vegetarian options since 2009, including a vegetarian sandwich available in restaurants across Canada.
Considering these options are only available for a very limited time, if you’re in the Greater Toronto Area, make sure to head to this location and try the plant-based options for yourself.
