Longtime Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek has “passed away peacefully at home early this morning,” according to the game show’s official Twitter account.

The beloved game show host and Canadian native announced in March 2019 that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer via a video message.

Trebek checked in one year later in March 2020 to update his fans and followers of his health status, and then again in July saying his treatment was ongoing and that he was in good spirits.

In a statement, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called Trebek an “icon,” saying he “entertained and educated millions around the world, instilling in so many of us a love for trivia.”

Trebek was said to be surrounded by family and friends when he passed. He was 80 years old.
