Highway 40 is going to be an absolute nightmare this weekend

If you’re going to or from the West Island on the first weekend of November, you might want to plan ahead as major parts of Highway 40 and its service roads will be closed in both directions.

Starting on Saturday at 6 pm, major construction on Montreal’s light-rail train system will completely close the popular roadway between Highway 13 (exit 60) and Saint-Jean Boulevard (exit 52), according to the Réseau express métropolitain (REM).

With thousands of daily commutes on the soon-to-be-closed road, officials are advising motorists to use Highway 20 if you live in Montreal or bypass the island by taking Highway 30 and the 440.

The major work will involve the demolition of a railway bridge over the 40. The work will be carried out day and night so that road service can resume by the start of Monday’s workweek at 5 am. Nearly 2,000 m3 of concrete will be demolished in two days.

The exit ramps from Highway 13 North and South to Highway 40 West will also be closed from Saturday to Monday.

Once completed, the REM light rail train will provide high-frequency service, 20 hours a day in 4 directions, the South Shore, Montréal-Trudeau Airport, Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, and Deux-Montagne.

The 100% electric train will have 26 stations that will cover 67 km and its first phase is slated for a 2021 opening.

Police will be positioned at various intersections to facilitate traffic, according to the REM.

Other options include public transit, being home by 6 pm, or staying home to rake the leaves.
