Environment Canada issues Special Weather Statement for Montreal

Jan 9 2020, 1:59 pm

Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for Montreal, calling for “significant” freezing precipitation this weekend.

Precipitation will begin as rain on Saturday morning before turning to freezing rain by Saturday night. Additionally, strong winds gusts of 60-70 km/h are expected on Sunday, with enough strength to knock down tree limbs and power lines.

The freezing rain could make “surfaces like roads, streets and sidewalks slippery and hazardous,” as per the weather agency.

The statement, issued early on Thursday morning, is in effect for the following areas:

  • Châteauguay – La Prairie area
  • Laval area
  • Longueuil – Varennes area
  • Montréal Island area

The alert notes that since we’re still a couple of days away from the weekend, there remains some uncertainty as to the weather’s path, which may affect the total rainfall and freezing precipitation amounts.

Environment Canada urges citizens to continually monitor weather updates and alerts heading into the weekend.
