Environment Canada has issued a Snow Squall Watch for Montreal and its surrounding areas.

A snow squall is a sudden heavy snowfall that consists of strong and gusty surface winds, it’s similar to a blizzard but is more localized.

“Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common,” reads the alert. “Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.”

The alert was posted on Wednesday morning and is in effect for the following areas:

  • Châteauguay – La Prairie area
  • Laval
  • Longueuil – Varennes area
  • Montreal Island area

Environment Canada urges citizens to monitor weather alerts and updates and to remain diligent when travelling outside.
