The Montreal Canadiens announced a peculiar personnel change at the AHL level on Friday.

Laval Rocket head coach Jean-Francois Houle is leaving to pursue another job with the NCAA’s Clarkson Golden Knights — despite signing an extension with the Canadiens organization just three weeks ago,

Rocket general manager John Sedgwick revealed in a press release that the team and bench boss have “come to a mutual agreement” to part ways as he rejoins his Alma Mater in Postdam, New York.

“We would like to thank Jean-François for his contribution to the development of the culture of our organization and our players. During his three years at the helm of the team, his dedication and experience allowed the Rocket to be highly competitive while preparing many players to make the jump to the NHL. We wish him the best of luck for this next chapter of his career,” said Sedgwick.

Houle, who is the son of former Canadiens player and general manager Rejean Houle, first joined the Rocket three years ago. Under his leadership, the 49-year-old coached Laval to the Calder Cup semi-finals in 2021-2022, marking the Rocket’s debut in the AHL playoffs.

After three consecutive postseason appearances, Laval missed the playoffs this past spring, posting a 33-31-6-2 record in the 2023-24 season.

Before joining the Canadiens organization, the Quebec City native coached the Bakersfield Condors (the Edmonton Oilers’ AHL affiliate) from 2015 to 2021.

The Habs have yet to announce an interim or full-time replacement for Houle.
