Experience Puerto Rico with a virtual vacation this weekend

Puerto Rico invites you to embark on a virtual vacation to the island’s shores and participate in fun and interactive activities that will make you feel like you’re abroad while you’re self-quarantining.

As the world comes together to combat the COVID-19 virus, a majority of people are practicing physical distancing and staying at home, which may lead to a teensy tiny bit of boredom.

Discover Puerto Rico, the destination’s marketing organization, wants to share the energetic and uplifting spirit of the island by inviting people to venture there on a virtual escape.

“We take great responsibility in helping stop the spread of COVID-19, so we’re not encouraging travellers to visit us right now as everyone needs to stay safe in their homes,” CEO of Discover Puerto Rico, Brad Cea, said in a press release.

“Instead, we want to extend an important part of our culture – our salsa music and dancing, our mixology and our delicious cuisine – to uplift people during these challenging times.”

Each day will feature a different activity.

On Friday, March 27, from 8 to 9 pm ET, notable choreographers and dancers Tito Ortos and his partner, Tamara Livolsi, will teach a virtual salsa lesson.

The lesson will begin with a short overview of basic salsa steps and will evolve into a “salsa dance party so that people can have a little fun from the comfort of their homes,” the release explains.

To join in on the fun, all you need is an internet connection, webcam, and fun-loving attitude.

You can log into Zoom for free. The meeting ID is #293-759-126.

If cocktails are more your speed, you’re going to love Saturday’s activity.

From 7 to 7:30 pm ET on Saturday, March 28, one of the island’s top bartenders, Roberto Berdecia, co-owner of La Factoría, voted one of the World’s 50 Best Bars, will be showing viewers how he makes some of his favourite drinks.

To participate in this activity, check out their Instagram Live at @discoverpuertorico.

Finally, on Sunday, March 29, Chef Wilo Benet, “who has redefined Puerto Rican cuisine” and “put the Island’s enchanting flavours on the global map,” will teach viewers how to create some of his favourite dishes from home via Instagram Live.

Access to this live stream will also be available through @discoverpuertorico.

“We encourage travellers to daydream about our Island now and consider a visit later when the time is right,” Dean continued in the release.

“In the meantime, we’re excited to join them in their living rooms for this virtual getaway.”
