Disneyland donating excess food from temporary closures to food bank

In a statement released to its website, Disneyland Resort announced that it would be donating all excess food resulting from the temporary closures of Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure due to the COVID-19 pandemic to Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.

The park, passionate about reducing food waste, explained that it is strictly adhering to food safety guidelines.

Excess stock of dairy, fruit, vegetables, packed goods, and banquet meals are being donated to the food bank, whose ultimate goal is to put an end to hunger in Orange County.

“Since 2014, the Disneyland Resort has operated a food donation program through which prepared, unserved food from select locations is regularly donated to support those in need within the local community,” the statement reads.

“This program is in addition to the food scraps diversion program, which also supports our environmental efforts in reducing food waste.”

According to the post, in 2019, Disneyland Resort donated more than 20,000 meals to Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.

As well, Disney “VoluntEARS” frequently volunteer at the establishment to further promote and support the objective to end hunger.

This news hopefully presents a silver lining in what only seems to be grey skies. Although self-isolation may feel as though we are alone, we are all in this together as a global community.

Actions such as these to help one another, even in times of struggle, illustrate a level of resiliency and kindness that serves to show that a little compassion genuinely does go a long way.
