7 spots in the West End that will make you feel like a local

The West End holds some of our city’s most underrated amenities that may have flown under your radar.

Yes, there’s world-class shopping at the West Edmonton Mall, but there’s much more than that. This neighbourhood is the result of a seamless intersection of nature and development, mom-and-pop shops, and hip eateries.

It’s quickly becoming a hot spot for young families and first-time homebuyers, and it’s easy to see why when you consider Edgemont. A dynamic community by Brookfield Residential,  a leading North American home and community developer, it features bright, spacious homes starting in the low $300,000s.

Living at Edgemont puts you in the centre of a growing community, with a vibrant restaurant scene and artisanal shops at your doorstep. But before we say any more, here are some of the many reasons to call the West End the best end.

Vivo Restaurante

We all know our city is home to epic food from all around the world, but perhaps the best bite of traditional Italian is found at Vivo. The West Edmonton location off Lessard Road and the Anthony Henday is their flagship location, serving up delicious dishes like capesante (pan-seared scallops), risotto di aragosta (lobster and butternut squash risotto), and tortellini — just like nonna used to make! Stop by for a romantic dinner for two, or bring a group of friends so you can try all the various plates on offer.

Waves Coffee House

Working from home is becoming a way of life for more and more Canadians, but no matter how gorgeous your house is, it’s easy to become distracted in a home office. Nearby Waves Coffee House has you covered, with unlimited wifi and weekday hours from 7 am to 7 pm. Sip on a cup of freshly-brewed coffee or indulge in a menu special like the beetroot frappe before getting down to business.

Whether you’re hunting for Pokémon or out for a morning walk, Wedgewood Creek Ravine is a wonderful spot for a scenic stroll— and you might even see some wildlife. This picturesque path leads out to a beautiful view of the North Saskatchewan River after five kilometres of nature scenes accompanied by the cheerful chirping of birds.

The Shops of Granville

There’s no shortage of places to go shopping in West Edmonton. Located on Granville Drive, The Shops of Granville is home to a wide selection of food spots (Coco Chicken, Edo Japan, Pizza 73, Tim Hortons), making it the perfect place to spend an afternoon on the weekend. There’s also a Rexall Pharmacy onsite, and Delux Nails for when you’re in need of a spa day. The mother of all stores in Canada, Costco, has a location over on Winterburn Road for pretty much every other retail need you have.

Edmonton Corn Maze

This popular Edmonton attraction draws crowds in from all across the city, and it’s just a five-minute drive from new West End communities like Edgemont. Have fun getting lost in 15 acres of corn because life is made for living. There’s even a new Edmonton-themed design etched into the corn every year to keep things interesting (think Edmonton Eskimos or Oilers).

Jamie Platz YMCA

For people who love to workout, knowing your next home is close to the kinds of amenities you like is crucial. The area around Edgemont is home to many yoga studios and gyms, but one of the most affordable and comprehensive options is the Jamie Platz YMCA. Membership grants you access to rec sports, gym time, the pool and hot tub, as well as drop-in fitness classes including yoga, bootcamp, and Zumba. As a bonus, there are plenty of family programs, too, if little ones are in your future.

Locals who appreciate gardening or want to fill their homes with some plant love are regular visitors to Creekside Home and Garden. As West Edmonton’s only family-operated year-round garden centre, it’s home to a selection of bedding plants, succulents, and locally-grown vegetables. Stop by and ask the expert staff for advice on the kind of plants that can enhance your home. Stock up the car with your new floral purchases and hit the road.

The aforementioned local spots and amenities only scratch the surface of what you can discover in Edmonton’s West End, and there’s more to come in this up-and-coming neighbourhood.

Like what you hear? Well, then it’s worth educating yourself about Edgemont. All homes in this new development are characterized by bright, modern living spaces, located close to parks and pathways, and most importantly, they have affordable price tags.
