The University of Alberta ranks among Canada’s top 10 schools, according to the 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), a prestigious global list that evaluates thousands of institutions each year.

U of A ranked in the top 150th globally and placed fifth overall in Canada, up from sixth in last year’s ranking.

To our south, the University of Calgary ranked sixth in Canada and the top 200 globally.

Only three Canadian universities made the global top 100: the University of Toronto, the University of British Columbia, and McGill University.

The University of Toronto led Canada, ranking 25th globally. UBC was second in Canada and 53rd worldwide, while McGill ranked 76th globally and third nationally.

More than 2,500 institutions were ranked, with Harvard University at the top of the ranking list for the 23rd year, followed by Stanford and MIT. The ARWU bases its rankings on factors such as faculty quality, major awards, highly cited researchers, and publications in leading journals.

The University of Alberta’s solid showing in the 2025 ARWU follows top marks in other global rankings earlier this year, including the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, where U of A cracked the top 10.
