Times are tense in Edmonton.

The Edmonton Oilers have slumped of late. Outside of an 8-1 thrashing of the Los Angeles Kings, they’ve lost five of their last six games.

Now, one of their most prominent ex-players is beefing with one of the longest-tenured Oilers reporters.

On Tuesday, Spittin’ Chiclets host Paul Bissonnette posted on X that Sportsnet’s Mark Spector had blocked Whitney on the social media platform.

While Bissonnette tried to stir the pot, Whitney downplayed it.

But, not without getting a jab in first.

Whitney continued his sparring with Spector after his original reply to Bissonnette, calling Spector “the softest guy in the league.”

The beef between Spector and Chiclets seems to have sparked last week, after Spector was questioned by some fans online for asking a question to Connor McDavid about whether he thought winning Stanley Cups or Olympic gold would be this hard.

“That’s a nice question, thank you,” McDavid replied sarcastically before answering the question.

Another Oilers reporter, Jason Gregor, went to bat for Spector while calling out Spittin’ Chiclets for posting the partial clip.

Spector retweeted the post, and he continued in his criticism of the podcast’s hosts on Tuesday.

ā€œListen, everyone who’s on the show has probably seen the clips, and I’m the guy that asked the question,” Spector said on Sportsnet 650’s Halford and Brough. “And it’s an impossible question to ask.ā€

ā€œ[McDavid] handled it with a ton of class. He gave me an excellent answer.ā€

Spector could have left his answer at that, but he made sure to get a jab of his own in for the ordeal.

ā€œIt was misrepresented on the internet,” he said.

ā€œAll those people out there who watch Spittin’ Chiclets and thinks there’s an ounce of truth coming out of those people, now you know there isn’t.ā€

Whitney spent four seasons playing for Edmonton between 2009 and 2013, while Spector has been covering the Oilers for over 30 years.
