Renovations have been underway since 2023 to restore one of Edmonton’s most iconic landmarks, the Union Bank Building, to its former glory.

The building was purchased by lawyer and businessman David Hawreluk in 2023, who planned to preserve and upgrade the pre-World War One building. As well as eventually moving his company into the building, Hawreluk also aimed to entice more businesses and amenities to the downtown area.

As part of the transformation, it has now been revealed that an exciting new restaurant concept is also on the way, courtesy of the team behind one of Edmonton’s most renowned restaurants.

Roca by Sabor, the latest project from the Sabor Group, aims to bring world-class culinary excellence to Edmonton’s downtown core. Similarly to Sabor, Roca will be serving a coastal-inspired menu using internationally sourced ingredients.

The restaurant space will occupy the main floor and private basement dining rooms of the Union Bank building and is slated to open by spring 2026.

“Bringing Roca by Sabor to the Union Bank building is an incredible opportunity to create something truly one-of-a-kind, showcasing the brand of hospitality we’ve become known for,” said Christian Mena, owner of Sabor Group.

“The combination of a stunning historic space and a fresh new dining experience is something we know Edmontonians – and visitors – will love. We’re excited to open our doors and add another exciting culinary destination to the downtown core.”
