If your August long weekend plans involve a river float, an escape to a nearby campground, or a trip to the Edmonton Heritage Festival, you might want to come up with a backup plan, because as it stands, the forecast is looking wet.
As we wind down the final week of July, things heat up, with sunny conditions and temperatures expected to hit 31°C by Thursday and Friday. But heading into the long weekend, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) predicts a different story.
Saturday will still be fairly warm with a high of 27°C, but there’s a 60 per cent chance of showers that could dampen the day.
Sunday cools down even more with a high of 21°C and steady rain in the mix, dipping to a low of 14°C overnight.

By Heritage Day on Monday, the rain could let up, but we’ll still be about 10 degrees cooler than the weekend’s start. Expect cloudy skies and a high of 21°C.

ECCC
Daily Hive chatted with ECCC scientist Christy Climenhaga, who says it’s not just Edmonton that is forecast to see a soggy long weekend.
“A widespread low is developing this weekend, and it’s still early to say exactly how much rain we will get, but it’s generally going to bring showery weather to much of Alberta on and off through the weekend,” Climenhaga said.
She added that, at this point in time, it’s still a bit of a waiting game to see exactly how much rain YEG will get as the upcoming system develops.
“It looks like it’s going to be poor timing for the August long weekend with regard to wet weather.”
So if you’re set on outdoor plans, don’t forget a rain poncho. Otherwise, there’s still plenty of great stuff to do indoors around Edmonton this long weekend!
