Prime Minister Mark Carney repping Edmonton Oilers merch before do-or-die Game 6

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will be tuned into tonight’s must-win Game 6 for the Edmonton Oilers.

A loss will end Edmonton’s season, while a victory will force a decisive Game 7 against the Anaheim Ducks at Rogers Place on Saturday night. Carney will be rooting for the latter, as he is a lifelong Oilers fan and has mentioned his Edmonton fandom on more than one occasion since being elected prime minister.

He even hit the ice with the Oilers during a practice at Rogers Place last season.

It seems like he is pulling out all the stops to cheer on the team from afar. While speaking to reporters in Ontario, the prime minister was repping an Oilers tie on Thursday morning.

There was some initial blowback to Carney’s choice of attire, as some thought the prime minister was wearing both an Oilers tie and a Montreal Canadiens jacket. Those are the last two Canadian teams still in the playoffs, and it would make sense for Canada’s leader to be rooting for both.

Yet, repping two teams at once during the playoffs is blasphemous to a lot of hockey fans. On further investigation, however, that is not a Canadiens jacket. Rather, it appears to be a Roots Canada jacket.

The arm of the jacket has a patch that insinuates it was custom-made for Carney.

The pin on the jacket is a strange one, as it has nothing to do with either the Oilers or the Canadiens. Instead, it’s a pin commemorating Alex Ovechkin for breaking the NHL’s all-time goal record.

It’s certainly an interesting choice considering Ovechkin’s Washington Capitals failed to make the playoffs, and the accomplishment happened over a year ago.

We’ll see if Carney’s tie ends up being a good luck charm or if he’ll have to store it away until next season.
