Edmonton's Citadel Theatre closes one of its restaurants due to 'operational difficulties'

PlayWright has officially closed its doors in Edmonton, meaning Citadel Theatre has lost its go-to fine-dining spot.

Nestled in the local Citadel Theatre was a casual fine-dining restaurant with some excellent dishes. After almost two years, PlayWright has announced its closure, attributing it to “operational difficulties.”

“After a lot of hard work, long nights, and fighting through some incredibly difficult operating conditions, PlayWright has closed its doors,” states the team on Instagram.

Not only did PlayWright serve the Citadel well, but it also offered an amazing space, great dishes, and a vibrant atmosphere within the theatre itself. In the heart of the arts district, this was the place to stop by if you wanted a good meal with friends, family, or a loved one.

“We’re proud of what we created; it definitely wasn’t perfect, but we tried, even if the conditions around us made it impossible to continue,” continues the team. “Thank you for being part of it.”

However, there is some light in the darkness.

Ghostlight, the sister cafe to PlayWright, will remain open. This means, if you’re stopping by the theatre anytime soon, there will still be a place to grab a bite. Continuing to support Ghostlight is more important now than ever, especially in the wake of PlayWright’s closure.

So, if you’re ever in the area, we’d recommend stopping by, grabbing a bite, and mourning the loss of one of Edmonton’s great restaurants.
