Perry mocks Stars player for turtling during fight at end of Edmonton Oilers game

The Edmonton Oilers may have lost Game 1 to the Dallas Stars, but Corey Perry hasn’t lost his flair for the dramatics.

It wasn’t the way that the Oilers wanted to kick off the Western Conference Final. The team was in complete control with a 3-1 lead going into the third period, only to allow five unanswered goals and lose by a score of 6-3. Three of those five goals came within the first 10 minutes of the period, each on the power play.

The frustrating manner in which Edmonton let the game slip away boiled over in the final seconds of regulation, with multiple scrums breaking out at the buzzer. Perry, of course, was at the center of things as he was trying to fight Stars’ youngster Liam Bichsel.

However, instead of fighting Perry, the 21-year-old Bichsel turtled and protected his head. This prompted the wily Oilers veteran to mock the young player as the refs gained control of the situation.

Perry has had himself a very good postseason with the Oilers, having scored five goals and seven points through 12 games. Game 1 against Dallas could have gone better for the former 50-goal scorer, as he took a penalty in the third period that led to the Stars tying goal.

This also wouldn’t be the first time that he mocked an opponent during a playoff scrum. During last year’s second round against the Vancouver Canucks, Perry held up his stick to Brock Boeser’s head to make sure he didn’t also get involved.

Perry, who is a veteran of 227 Stanley Cup Playoff games, knows better than anyone that a series is not won in Game 1. Though it was a frustrating way to start the series, the Oilers have been overcoming adversity all season long.

We’ll see if they can come back in Game 2 on Friday night to tie things up before the series shifts to the Alberta capital.
