George Parros snaps back after McDavid casts doubt on NHL Player Safety

George Parros has responded after Connor McDavid cast some doubt on the process used by NHL Player Safety.

The Edmonton Oilers captain had some interesting comments on the process that Parros and his team use when determining suspension lengths over the weekend. When asked about the latest Radko Gudas five-game suspension for kneeing Auston Matthew, McDavid chose his words carefully, but did mention that the league should maybe review how things are done.

“I think player safety has done their best,” McDavid said. “It’s not an easy thing to do. With that being said, I think there is reason to take a look at how the whole process works.

“If every time there’s a suspension, everybody complains about it, why don’t we take a look at the process and figure out if there’s a better way to make sure both parties are happy? It seems like there’s a lot of frustration there.”

It was a measured take from McDavid, who tends to shy away from criticizing the league, and it brought up a good point. It feels like controversy strikes the Player Safety department nearly every time a suspension is dished out.

Though it doesn’t appear Parros is too keen on changing how his staff go about their process to determine suspension length. The former NHL tough guy sent out a statement of his own on Tuesday responding to McDavid’s comments.

Sportsnet’s Eric Engels shared Parros’ comments on X.

“We sweat over these decisions and pore over these decisions every night, all season long,” Parros said. “We have a process in place that’s consistent, and we have a team that works for me, and together with me, that evaluates all these plays. A very experienced team, a veteran team.

“So, our process, I feel very confident in. We’ve got great guys who make these decisions, and I think the players should be confident in this team to do so.”

It’s not surprising to see Parros, who has been the NHL’s Player Safety head since 2017, defend the department he’s been running for so long. However, it will rub a lot of fans who have not been happy with his work the wrong way.

There probably is no lasting impact between these two back-and-forth statements, as McDavid and Parros are both professionals. The Oilers captain also isn’t a regular offender, having been suspended just twice in his NHL career.
