Video coach Jeremy Coupal will be parting ways with the Edmonton Oilers, as per TSNs Ryan Rishaug.

Not often are video coaches known by the majority of a fanbase. Still, Coupal became a cult hero in Edmonton over the past few seasons thanks to some outstanding work regarding his coaching challenges.

He has made several quick and clutch calls in a stressful job that have undoubtedly helped the Oilers in the standings.

The reason for Coupal’s departure has yet to be made public, but it is a big loss given what an outstanding job he had done. He has served as the Oilers’ video coach since the 2016-17 season, and prior to that was with the Nashville Predators for three years as a video coordinator.

Coaches’ challenges were first introduced into the NHL ahead of the 2015-16 season, though at the time using a challenge didn’t have much of a consequence. It has gotten a lot harder for teams since the league added a rule that a failed challenge would result in a two-minute minor, making the jobs of Coupal and others around the league that much more difficult.

Rishaug made no mention of who may step up and replace Coupal. The hope for Oilers fans is that they can find someone that will match his level of success, but doing so will be much easier said than done.
