Edmonton Oilers tease new 'Hometown Remix' logo and jersey

The Edmonton Oilers will be getting a new logo and jersey as part of the upcoming “Hometown Remix” rollout.

In August, the NHL announced the league-wide “Hometown Remix” initiative, which will prompt all 32 teams to introduce a new jersey based on a specific theme. The initial release stated that the collection of jerseys “will be anchored by special edition uniforms that uniquely and authentically celebrate the fans, city, and local culture of each team.”

Early reports indicated the Oilers would introduce a black jersey as part of the program, a fact that seemed to be confirmed during Monday morning’s practice at Rogers Place.

Players took to the ice using different gear than usual, trading out the team’s trademark blue gloves for black, and donning black pants with a recoloured Oilers logo.

The new Oilers logo uses the same basic design as their usual mark, but is recoloured in a way that’s never been done before. The royal blue is gone, the “Oilers” script is now black, outlined in orange and grey, which almost gives it a neon effect.

It appears Edmonton will wear black matte helmets with the new uniform, a trend that has picked up steam in the NHL, but has not been used by the Oilers.

The new look could resemble Team North America’s look at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, a jersey Connor McDavid wore in just his second pro season.

Edmonton’s goaltenders were also breaking in some custom gear for the new look, though they took vastly different approaches. Devon Levi showed up to practice with a set of bright orange gear, while Tristan Jarry embraced the darkness with an all-black look with subtle grey and orange accents.

The two sets of gear are sure to look very interesting when the whole uniform is eventually revealed.

There has yet to be any word on when the Oilers will officially reveal the new jersey. The team breaking in new equipment suggests that it could be coming soon, however. It also remains to be seen how many times Edmonton will wear the uniform and which games they will be used in.

Jersey schedule announcements from other NHL teams also suggest that Hometown Remix jerseys will be revealed soon as well, with the Philadelphia Flyers slated to wear theirs in just a few weeks on Nov. 3.

The Oilers have enjoyed wearing their current alternate jersey this season, going an impressive 3-0-0 on a recent road trip wearing them, while outscoring opponents 12-3 in that span.

Fans will hope that these new threads will have a similar effect.
