The Edmonton Oilers have liked what they’ve seen from top AHL prospect Quinn Hutson this season.
After tearing up the AHL with 23 goals and 38 points in just 30 games, Oilers GM Stan Bowman decided that he needed to act quickly with Hutson. The team announced on Monday afternoon that they had re-signed the 24-year-old forward to a two-year contract extension that carries a cap hit of $875,000.
Hutson has appeared in four NHL games with the Oilers this season, where he recorded one goal while playing in a bottom-six role. The new contract will kick in next year and run through the 2027-28 season.

Hutson has exceeded expectations in his first professional season. The undrafted forward initially signed with the Oilers out of the NCAA last April after scoring 23 goals and 50 points in 38 games with Boston University.
On top of being third-overall in AHL scoring this season, Hutson also leads all rookies in points as well, with a 10-point lead over second-place forward Matvei Gridin of the Calgary Flames organization.
Hutson has been scoring at an extraordinary rate over the last three months, with 35 points in just 20 AHL games since Nov. 8. He was named the AHL’s rookie of the month in December after pocketing nine goals and 13 points in just eight games.
While he has had some issues sticking in the NHL lineup this season, it’s obvious that the Oilers are very happy with where Hutson is in his development. He is a bit of an older prospect at 24, meaning that he will likely have an advantage over some of the younger players in the Edmonton system.
There is a good chance that he plays more NHL games this season and will certainly have a chance at securing a full-time spot on the Oilers in time for next year. Until then, Edmonton likely wants to keep him percolating in the AHL and to continue having success.
