Edmonton Oilers prospect had legendary reaction after getting into multiple AHL fights

Edmonton Oilers prospect Connor Clattenburg turned back the clock with a fight-filled AHL game over the weekend.

The 20-year-old has made a name for himself in the Oilers system as a hard-nosed, energetic forward who is not afraid to drop the gloves. Clattenburg has demonstrated this during Oilers training camps over the past two seasons, and it appears he has not shied away from that game during his first professional season.

Clattenburg is playing with the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors this season and has already fought five times through 14 games. Two of which came in a single game over the weekend against the Coachella Valley Firebirds.

The feisty forward finished the game with two fights, a 10-minute misconduct, and a whopping 26 penalty minutes. This means that Clattenburg spent over a full period of the game sitting in the penalty box.

That didn’t hurt his team, however, as the Condors cruised to a 6-3 victory. After the game, Clattenburg was fired up with an interview on the ice, and he wasn’t afraid to drop the F-bomb.

“I f*cking love it in [the penalty box],” Clattenburg said with a smile. “That’s what I want to do every night.”

Clattenburg was initially drafted in the fifth round of the 2024 draft by the Oilers. He never had gaudy offensive numbers while playing in the OHL, but he did possess many intangibles that made him attractive to NHL teams, including his physical play.

He has also demonstrated some leadership qualities, being named captain of the OHL’s Flint Firebirds last season. When asked after the game, Clattenburg said that he wouldn’t be changing his style of play anytime soon.

“That’s what’s gonna get me to the next level,” Clattenburg said. “I’m going to keep playing that way; nothing is going to stop me.”

While Oilers fans may be clamouring to get a real look at Clattenburg in the NHL, they shouldn’t be expecting a promotion any time soon. He is still 20 years old and has just 14 AHL games under his belt, in which he has mustered a measly two points.

Clattenburg will need a lot more time to develop before he’s ready for a shot at the show. For now, all he can do is continue to put up memorable performances like he did on Saturday night.
