Edmonton Oilers players have replaced 'Pink Pony Club' with a new victory song

The “Pink Pony Club” era of the Edmonton Oilers has officially come to an end.

After the song became the team’s victory anthem during last year’s Stanley Cup Final run, Oilers players have opted to go a different direction this season. Chappell Roan’s voice will no longer be heard echoing from the Edmonton dressing room after playoff wins. Instead, the players have opted to take inspiration from 1970s disco.

Following Tuesday night’s 3-0 victory over the Seattle Kraken, the funky vibes of the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive” were heard pumping out of the Oilers room. This was confirmed by TSN’s Ryan Rishaug shortly after the victory.

It is certainly an interesting choice from an NHL team based in Alberta with exactly zero players who were born in the 1970s. Yet, it seems to be a fitting choice for an Oilers team simply trying to “stay alive” in a fierce Western Conference playoff race.

While the team was very secretive about the origin of last year’s “Pink Pony Club” victory song, which was eventually revealed last summer, that doesn’t appear to be the case with the
“Stayin’ Alive” choice.

Oilers forward Kasperi Kapanen was asked about the choice after the victory and wasn’t shy about telling reporters about how it came about.

“Me and [Darnell Nurse] thought it would fit the situation pretty well,” Kapanen said. “Just kinda trying to stay alive, and we’ve been playing well since. Hopefully, it’s going to stick.

“You just talk to Darnell, and Darnell is going to [change the song]. He decided to change it and, like I said, it’s just been working for us.”

Fans who have come to love the team’s iconic use of “La Bamba” have nothing to fear. That will remain the Oilers’ win song used in the arena after each victory and is still very much a part of the organization’s identity.

The Bee Gees will primarily be used inside Edmonton’s dressing room, but there is a chance the Rogers Place DJ could sprinkle it into the last minute of victories as they did with “Pink Pony Club” last season.

Regardless of your feelings toward the Bee Gees, Oilers fans will be hoping to hear a ton of disco throughout the Ice District this Spring.
