Ex-Edmonton Oilers player Corey Perry off to red-hot start with his new team

Corey Perry left the Edmonton Oilers last summer, but he hasn’t missed a beat with the LA Kings to start the new season.

The 40-year-old forward became an unlikely fan favourite among the Oilers faithful after spending a season and a half with the club. Last season saw him defy his age and put up 19 goals in the regular season, while also being among the team’s most productive playoff scorers with 10 goals en route to the Stanley Cup Final.

While he did not start this season on time due to an injury, Perry has since recovered and is off to a red-hot start with the Kings. Through seven games, he has found a way to notch five goals and seven points.

In contrast, that goal total would tie for second on the Oilers right now alongside Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, just behind first-place Leon Draisaitl, who has nine goals through 13 games.

While it must be disheartening for Oilers fans to see Perry have so much success after the team let him walk this summer, it’s likely even weirder for Kings fans. For most of his career, the veteran pest played for the rival Anaheim Ducks and terrorized L.A. with both his offensive prowess and his annoying antics.

Not to mention that he was also a member of the last two Oilers teams that eliminated the Kings in the first round of the playoffs. There was a little animosity leftover from all those moments, as L.A. fans booed him during his introduction at this year’s home opener.

Even with Perry scoring goals and continuing to evade Father Time, the Kings have struggled out of the gate. The team currently sits one point back of the Oilers with a 5-4-4 record through 13 games.

The hope among the L.A. faithful will be to avoid a fifth-straight first-round matchup with the Oilers. However, with Perry’s luck, even if they got past Edmonton, they might be fated to lose in the Stanley Cup Final anyhow.

Oilers fans will be optimistic that shedding that curse will help them finally win it all this season.
