Edmonton Oilers have a new goalie coach after behind the bench shuffle

The Edmonton Oilers have made a long-awaited change to their coaching staff.

Three new coaches were hired by the Oilers on Monday morning, including a new goalie coach. Peter Aubry, who served as the Chicago Blackhawks’ goalie coach from 2015 to 2022, will join the Oilers as the organization looks to improve its goaltending development.

Paul McFarland was also hired as a new assistant coach, while Conor Allen was brought on as a skills coach.

The 48-year-old Aubry will replace longtime Oilers goalie coach Dustin Schwartz, who served in that position for the last decade. He most recently served as an assistant coach for the University of Nebraska-Omaha over the previous two seasons.

There is an obvious connection between Aubry and Oilers GM Stan Bowman, as the two worked together with the Blackhawks.

McFarland will join the Oilers bench as an assistant after serving as the head coach of the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen last season. The 39-year-old will bring some youth behind the Oilers bench, and brings some NHL experience, having previously worked as an assistant for the Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Seattle Kraken.

McFarland will run the Oilers’ power play after the departure of Glen Gulutzan, who left Edmonton to coach the Dallas Stars.

Allen will come to the Oilers as skills coach, replacing Olympian David Pelletier, who was poached by Gulutzan to be an assistant on his Dallas staff. Allen most recently worked as an assistant coach for the United States National U17 team in the NTDP.

Finally, Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch has extended a few of his other coaches. Mark Stuart will remain on the Oilers’ bench to work with the penalty kill with expanded responsibilities to handle the defensive group. Noah Segall will stay on as video coach.

Paul Coffey will not return as an assistant coach heading into the new season, with the Oilers confirming that he will go back to his old role as special advisor to ownership and hockey operations.
