There will be some new names and faces for Edmonton Oilers fans to learn once the 2025-26 season gets underway.
The Oilers have seen several players depart from their 2024-25 roster, with Corey Perry, Connor Brown, Viktor Arvidsson, Evander Kane, and John Klingberg all finding new homes. Jeff Skinner remains up for grabs on the free-agent market, while Derek Ryan is believed to be retiring.
In order to help make up for those losses, the Oilers have added players such as Andrew Mangiapane, Curtis Lazar, and, most recently, Isaac Howard.
The Oilers announced new numbers for all three players today, along with a number swap for another.
Kicking things off is Howard, whose recent acquisition has garnered plenty of excitement amongst Oilers fans. The 21-year-old, who has yet to play in the NHL, will wear No. 53, which was worn by Skinner this past season.
As for Mangiapane, he will continue to rock No. 88 as he has done for the vast majority of his NHL career. Only two players have worn that number in the history of the Oilers organization, with the most recent being defenceman Brandon Davidson.
Lazar, meanwhile, will wear No. 20. That, too, is a number he has worn at times throughout his career, although he had previously worn No. 42 with the New Jersey Devils over the past few seasons. No. 20 was worn by Oilers prospect Quinn Hutson in two games late in the 2024-25 campaign.
The number swap happens to be for Trent Frederic, who was acquired at the trade deadline from the Boston Bruins. The 27-year-old donned No. 21 for the Oilers this past season, but will be going with No. 10 moving forward. That number became available this offseason with Derek Ryan’s departure.
Though it will still be some time before getting to see these new numbers and faces in Oilers colours, today’s announcement helps garner some excitement for what should be another thrilling season ahead in Edmonton.
