No more emptying pockets: Edmonton Oilers unveil new AI security system at Rogers Place

Going to an Edmonton Oilers game at Rogers Place will be a little bit different going forward.

Security screening can be an annoying process when it comes to emptying your pockets and going through the arena gates. Fumbling with your keys, wallet, and phone can hold up lines and make it an unpleasant experience for all involved.

The Oilers Entertainment Group (OEG) has teamed up with a company called Evolv to remedy that problem. New security gates have been installed at each arena entrance that utilizes AI and advanced sensor technology to help identify and differentiate potential risks from harmless everyday items.

This means that fans will no longer have to empty their pockets when going to games.

“This new security screening will simplify access to Rogers Place and ICE District, ultimately enhancing our fans’ experience,” said Caroline Hamel, vice-president of Fan Experience and Security at OEG, in a release.

“The safety of our fans in ICE District is a top priority for us and we’re always looking for ways to strengthen security.”

These gates will also be used outside the arena for events at the ICE District Plaza and Fan Park.

Rogers Place has also changed the order in which fans enter the arena. Tickets will now be scanned before going through the security gates to help streamline the flow of fans and get people in the arena faster.

“We’re very proud to add the Oilers, Oil Kings and Rogers Place to our growing roster of sports customers in Canada,” said John Baier, the Vice President of Sports & Entertainment with Evolv. “The Oilers and Rogers Place are both literally and figuratively at the heart of Alberta’s impressive sports and entertainment culture.

“We appreciate being entrusted with such an important part of their guest experience.”

OEG clarified that the current bag policy has remained unchanged. Fans are asked to leave large bags at home and to bring in small body clutches or fanny packs instead.

These new security gates are set to debut for tonight’s Oilers games and are expected to stick around for the foreseeable future.
