Oilers Nation getting name change as part of major rebrand

A longtime Edmonton Oilers blog will be undergoing a name change over the next few months.
Oilers Nation, which has been around since 2007, will no longer be using that name going forward. On Wednesday morning, the website announced that it will now be known as “Daily Faceoff Edmonton” as part of a major rebrand across the Nation Network.
Similar name changes will be applied to other Nation Network sites, including Canucks Army in Vancouver, Flames Nation in Calgary, and The Leafs Nation in Toronto.
“We are very excited about this next chapter because of what it unlocks for our business,” said Jay Downton, co-founder and president of The Nation Network, in a release. “By taking this step, we will be able to unlock more content for our fans, provide greater opportunities for our teammates, and ultimately drive the next step for TNN and Daily Faceoff as a hockey platform.”

The Nation Network purchased Daily Faceoff back in 2013, and the two brands were acquired together by digital media company Playmaker Capital in 2021.
The rebrand has already taken hold of the Oilers Nation social media accounts, with their new logo and name being applied to their Facebook, X, Instagram, and YouTube accounts.
According to Zach Laing, the managing editor of Oilers Nation and news director at The Nation Network, the website is not expected to undergo a full transition to Daily Faceoff Edmonton until January 2027.
“Bittersweet day for our company. I’m excited for what’s to come, but obviously the change is a big one,” wrote long-time Oilers Nation contributor BaggedMilk on X. “Back when I joined in 2008, none of us expected our dreams to blow up the way they did, and this move will let us continue to grow and build.”
According to Downton, part of the reason for the change is to move to a more mature and unified brand under the separate cities that make up The Nation Network, but there could be more to it than that.
Over the years, Oilers Nation has seemingly made attempts to distance itself from the actual NHL team. Incorporating the trademarked word “Oilers” into its name held the potential to cause friction between the brand and the NHL team.
In recent years, a disclaimer was added to the top of the Oilers Nation website to make it clear the website isn’t directly affiliated with the Oilers, Oilers Entertainment Group, NHL, or NHLPA.
Similar disclaimers can be found at the top of Canucks Army, Flames Nation, and The Leafs Nation.
