Edmonton Oilers showing 'significant interest' in potential Tristan Jarry trade: report

The rumours around the Edmonton Oilers trading for a new goalie have ramped up this week.

Following speculation that the Oilers have shown interest in St. Louis Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington on Tuesday, a new name has popped up. This time, it’s a goalie who has ties to Edmonton: Tristan Jarry.

NHL Network insider Kevin Weekes took to social media on Wednesday afternoon, announcing that Edmonton has shown significant interest in acquiring the Pittsburgh Penguins’ goaltender.

The 30-year-old spent his junior hockey days playing in the Alberta capital between 2011 and 2015, winning a Memorial Cup with the Edmonton Oil Kings in 2014.

I’m told 2X NHL All-Star and Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry is among the goalies drawing significant interest as a potential option for the Edmonton Oilers,” wrote Weekes. “Keep in mind, he played in Edmonton with the Oil Kings.”

Jarry is coming off a brutal 2024-25 season with the Penguins last year that saw him be demoted to the AHL for a stretch. He put up a mediocre .893 save percentage and had a disappointing -4.7 GSAx through 36 games.

Before that, however, Jarry had been able to string together several reliable seasons in the Pittsburgh crease, posting a save percentage of .903 or higher in five straight seasons between 2019 and 2024.

As he works his way back to being an NHL regular this season, it is starting to look like maybe last year’s struggles were a bump in the road. Jarry has looked good for the Penguins this year, posting a 5-2-0 record and a .911 save percentage through seven games. His GSAx has also rebounded to a more-than-respectable +4.8.

While he has enjoyed a better start this season, the Penguins seem to be eager to move on. They acquired Arturs Silovs over the offseason, who has taken over the starter’s role, and Pittsburgh seems eager to give prospect goalie Sergei Murashov more opportunities.

The Surrey, B.C., native carries a hefty $5.37 million cap hit that runs for the next two seasons, meaning that the Oilers would either need to clear out a significant amount of cap space or have the Penguins retain on a trade.

It would be a risky bet for the Oilers to go this direction, considering Jarry is not a pending UFA and is coming off a brutal season. You would think that Edmonton would want more of a sure bet in a trade for a goalie with term, but Jarry could be one of the cheaper options on the market.
