Edmonton Oilers GM Stan Bowman outlines decision to sign Roslovic

Jack Roslovic is the newest member of the Edmonton Oilers.

After signing the 28-year-old to a one-year deal midway through their home opener, Roslovic will now head to the Alberta capital to join the Oilers.Ā GM Stan Bowman held an impromptu press conference in the second intermission of that game to provide reporters a sense of why the Oilers decided to bring aboard Roslovic.

Bowman confirmed that the team had been in talks with the player all summer, with Roslovic finally deciding to sign with Edmonton now.

“Going back to the summer, I know he changed agents, and I talked to his new agent about a month ago,” Bowman said. “We’ve been in touch the whole time, and I said the same thing to him then that I did the other day when this picked back up, which was we love the player.

“We think he could be a really nice piece to our group right now… I think he might have led the [Carolina Hurricanes] in even-strength points last year. That’s one thing we’re trying to add to our group.”

Edmonton will not be able to freely add Roslovic to the team without making some kind of roster move. Bowman confirmed that with the media and said a decision will be made soon on who will be sent down to make room for him.

The Oilers GM would not immediately say what kind of role Roslovic will play in this forward group, but praised his skill set and thinks he will fit right in with the rest of the forward group.

“It’s up to the coaches to figure out,” Bowman said. “We got a really talented, versatile offensive player, so we use him in a lot of different ways depending on who is playing wing or centre.

“We also like his speed… He can make plays, play with good players, he’s been an offensive player, and he plays at a high pace.”

Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch seemed to balk at the idea that the team will ease Roslovic into game shape, citing the lack of practices in the upcoming schedule. Instead, he seemed to indicate that the Ohio native will be in the lineup in short order.

“After Friday, we don’t have many practices,” Knoblauch said. “Our schedule doesn’t really allow him to get some practices under his belt and fit in with the team, so it’ll probably be sooner rather than later.”

With Roslovic set to join the Oilers on Friday immediately, that could leave Saturday night’s game against the Vancouver Canucks as his potential debut.

We will have to wait and see what Edmonton decides to do with their new acquisition.
