Edmonton Oilers fans loving Jake Walman's unique celly after OT winner

Jake Walman made his presence known during his season debut with the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night.

After missing the first six games of the season with an injury, Walman finally got back into the lineup against the Ottawa Senators. It was a night of milestones for the team as Adam Henrique played in his 1,000th NHL game, Stuart Skinner recorded his 100th NHL win, and Ike Howard scored his first NHL goal.

It was Walman, however, who made sure that the Oilers also got to celebrate a victory as well, notching the OT winner to defeat the Senators by a 3-2 score. It was a blistering slapshot that wound up beating Ottawa goaltender Linus Ullmark, but it was the defender’s celebration that got fans talking.

The 29-year-old Toronto native did a classic fist pump down on one knee and then ended it with a head shimmy. It was very well executed.

It might be October, but that was a big goal for this Oilers club as it broke a three-game losing streak and ended this five-game road trip on a winning note. It was definitely one worth celebrating.

Unfortunately, Walman was not asked about the celebration after the game, but he did talk about what it meant to make such a big impact in his first game.

“It was a long time sitting out, so probably on this one, a bit of relief,” Walman said. “Just happy to be back. We got a great team, I thought we played a good game, and we were fortunate to win it.”

Oilers fans took note of the unique celebration and took to social media to comment on it. Many loved to see some emotion from the team after what has been a fairly bland start to the season.

He is well on his way to becoming a fan favourite, which is good considering he is fresh off signing a massive seven-year contract extension.

“The celly king,” one fan dubbed Walman on social media.

“Love the Walman celly,” said another.

This wouldn’t be the first time that Walman has made waves with his goal celebrations. During his time with the Detroit Red Wings, he would regularly hit the griddy, a viral dance craze that swept social media for a time.

Daily Hive asked Walman if fans could expect that celly to return shortly after he was traded to Edmonton last season. Unfortunately, the answer was no, but this latest one shows he’s still getting creative with things.

Fans will be waiting to see what he has cooked up for his next goal.
