Oilers fans troll Dallas Stars goalie with ruthless chant in Edmonton

Edmonton Oilers fans got creative to get under the skin of Dallas Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger during Sunday afternoon’s Game 3.

Rogers Place has earned the nickname of “The Terrordome” during this playoff run, all thanks to the passion that Oilers fans have for the team. The fanbase has terrorized opposing goaltenders through the first two rounds with various chants, but none have been as creative as what they had in store for Oettinger.

There were sporadic “Jaaaaaacob” chants throughout the night, but for a bit in the second period, fans started to chant “U.S. backup” at the American goaltender.

This is referencing the fact that Oettinger was relegated to a backup role during Team USA’s run at the Four Nations Face Off earlier this season. Instead, the Americans trusted Winnipeg Jets superstar Connor Hellebuyck to be their starter while the Stars veteran rode the bench for the majority of the tournament.

It seemed to work, as the Oilers ran away with Game 3 by a score of 6-1 with some help from a breakout goal-scoring performance from Connor McDavid.Ā

Before this Western Conference Final series against the Oilers, Oettinger was among the best goalies in the playoffs with a save percentage of about .920. That has since dropped down to .906 as Edmonton has found a way to score 12 goals on Oettinger through the first three games of the series.

If you isolate his numbers in the series, he is currently rocking a .839 save percentage, meaning the Oilers have found plenty of ways to beat him early on. Stuart Skinner, on the other hand, has been excellent with a shutout and .910 save percentage.

Edmonton fans will be hoping that these trends continue the way they are as the series progresses.
