Oilers fan once predicted 2024 playoff run in high school yearbook

While many fans were confident coming into the season that the Edmonton Oilers could win the Stanley Cup, one has been envisioning it for quite some time.

William Dmytrow, who graduated high school in Saskatoon in 2018, had a yearbook prediction that is becoming closer and closer to reality.

“Edmonton Oilers 2024, watch it happen,” Dmytrow wrote.

That prediction looked like it was going to fall just short exactly one week ago, as the Florida Panthers defeated the Oilers by a 4-3 final to take a commanding 3-0 series lead. Since then, however, the Oilers have outscored the Panthers by a combined 13-4 and are right back in the thick of things, trailing 3-2.

“In the last 12 hours I have been blown up with my yearbook quote and I felt like it was time to trace the journey for you!” Dmytrow wrote on Instagram two days ago. “Six years ago I made the prediction that my favourite team would win the Stanley Cup, and as you have seen I have been unwavering in my belief of this team.

“As you see, at the beginning of the playoffs not many believed in me, and especially when we were 0-3 I was simply laughed at. But I have always believed!!!”

Though the Oilers still have some work to do, Dmytrow’s prediction has a much better chance of becoming a reality than it did just one week ago.

Thanks to a big 5-3 win on Tuesday, the Oilers are headed back to Rogers Place to play in Game 6 versus the Panthers tomorrow night. Though they continue to maintain they are taking things one day and one game at a time, they are getting closer and closer to becoming only the second team in NHL history (1942 Toronto Maple Leafs) to battle back from trailing 3-0 and winning the Stanley Cup.
